Rolling Stones in the Dome

It's hard to believe that The Rolling Stones were formed all the way back in 1962. They had their first Top 10 hit back in 1964, and the first time I saw them live was in 1981. That's a remarkable life for a rock band, spanning 57 years.... and counting. If you had told me in 1981 that the band would still be touring in 2019, I'd have laughed. But at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the band not only performed in front of around 40,000 fans of all ages, they rocked the house!

Mick Jagger is still doing Mick Jagger things. At 78, Charlie Watts is the oldest member of the band, but Mick made a Nola-centric joke out of it, introducing him as "fresh from Preservation Hall." He had a couple of other local references, as well, pointing out where he'd passed the 10-yard line and hoping there wouldn't be any no-calls. (Saints fans will appreciate that joke forever, even if it will be forever too soon).

The show was originally supposed to happen as part of Jazzfest, but Mick Jagger's recent heart valve surgery took care of that. Once Mick's health improved, the band scheduled a new show at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for Sunday, July 15th. That was disrupted by Barry, but the show finally happened the next night. Mick Jagger joked about their indoor show being rained out ("rained off," in his words). But they finally played, and both the audience and the band seemed to really appreciate the one final reunion on the Gulf Coast.
