Shawn Mendes Says His Body 'Went Numb' When Meeting The Royal Family

Not everyone can hold their cool when meeting the British royal family and Shawn Mendes knows that anxiety all too well, as per his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday (May 17).

When the conversation turned to talk about his performance for Queen Elizabeth II's 92nd birthday, the 19-year-old star, who is half British himself, admitted that he looked at the performance as a “massive deal.” Nonetheless, the opportunity also arrived with an awkward 10-minute gap of silence when the Queen walked right up to the star in a backstage corridor. "You can’t say anything! You’re not allowed to speak to her unless she speaks to you first," he told DeGeneres of the "super weird encounter." "She didn’t look at me at all. I looked over a couple of times."

Amid his appearance, Mendes also found himself coming across Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are scheduled to tie the knot on Saturday, but he just didn't have the courage to approach them. Well, he started to, but then backed out from the opportunity and it's something he called his "biggest regret forever." "The second they kind of felt me coming, I just turned around and my body went numb and I was like, 'I can’t do it, I can’t do it.' I've never been so star-struck like that," he added.

You can expect more from Mendes when he takes to our 2018 iHeartRadio Wango Tango by AT&T, which will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest. The star-studded lineup also includes the recently announced Backstreet Boys, Meghan Trainor, 5 Seconds of Summer, NF, Miguel, Janelle Monáe and Marshmello with a special guest performance by Logic, with more to be announced. The concert series will be the first to be held at the all-new Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on June 2.

The best part is, music fans from all over the US can watch it all go down via a live stream exclusively on ATT.com and Twitter.
