Ketchup is NOT a Hot Dog Topping... Or Is It?

In the world of social media, every day is designated for something. Today, July 18th, is National Hot Dog Day. Or #NationalHotDogDay as it's trending on Twitter. Now there are at least a few good places in Mobile in which to get a good hot dog: Dew Drop, Chi-Town Dawgz, and Al's Hot Dogs. But no mattter where I buy a hot dog, I'm not going to put ketchup on it. Ketchup is just not a hot dog topping.

Or is it? A new survey at National Today lists ketchup as the #1 topping on hot dogs, picked as the favorite topping by fully 25% of respondents. Chili was second and mustard came in third.

For me, the most important topping is mustard -- preferably spicy mustard. But sauerkraut is way up near the top of that list and definitely improves any hot dog. It was listed as the best topping by Thrillist.com, even if it's not the most popular.

The Thrillist list included some interesting toppings, including cream cheese. Their words: "trust us." No worries, I'll trust anyone who wants me to eat cream cheese. And their Top 5 toppings are all good:

  1. Sauerkraut
  2. Bacon
  3. Mustard
  4. Chili
  5. Cheese

Ketchup was listed down in 10th place. Again, in their words: "...once you've graduated middle school, it's time to move on to better (and tastier) things."

Thank you, Lawrence Police Department for setting us straight. "It's , and ketchup does not belong on a hot dog."
