If you love Christmas, you'll love Selfridge's department store in London. The store revolutionized shopping when it opened back in 1908, creating the department store concept we're all familiar with today. (Watch Mr. Selfridge for a bit of dramatized history, it's really good). But now, they're putting Christmas into the back-to-school shopping season. And believe it or not, the store's managers have actually showed some restraint compared to one year ago.
Last year, Selfridge's had its own version of Christmas in July! Yes, they opened their Christmas shop in July 2017. This year, they waited until August. It's only a week later, but it shows that even they might have realized they were taking things a bit far.
In case you're wondering what prompted this madness, it's as easy as supply and demand. The company says that shoppers really like it, especially those who come to the store from outside the UK. For now, CNBC reports the store is stocking some 500 items, but will expand to over 3,800 after Labor Day.
It may seem crazy, but when you realize there are stores that do Christmas stuff year round, maybe it's not such a big deal. There's one in Mobile, of course, but the biggest and the best may be in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Bronner's Christmas Wonderland bills itself the "World's Largest Christmas Store;" and while I've only visited once, I'm convinced they're not exaggerating. Definitely a worthy stop if you're up that way.
In the meantime, Mix 99.9 will wait awhile before we get into our annual Christmas tradition. Sometime in November. But if you just can't wait for Christmas, there's always a trip to London and the Christmas shop at Selfridges. And of course, there's Christmas music anytime on iHeartRadio.
