For Lease: "Close Encounters" House in Fairhope

The listing for an office on Hwy 181 in Fairhope doesn't mention anything about its famous past. This is the house from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," the 1977 Steven Spielberg movie that was filmed in the Mobile/Baldwin area.

It's available, for $1800 a month.

Remember the house where Jillian (Melinda Dillon) and her son lived? Remember the scene where the kid opens the door to a blazing bright light and is abducted by aliens? (Surely after over 40 years that can't be considered a spoiler!) AL.com points out that the kid is all grown up now and living in Birmingham, where he's a financial adviser...

Local photographer Mark Baggs saw the sign and his post on Facebook drew AL.com's attention to the listing... and that sparked my interest as well.

I remember some of my friends in band got to shoot a scene at a hangar at Brookley. Some of the other local sites included a home in Colonial Heights in west Mobile (where Richard Dreyfus' character lived) and an area in Bay Minette where the evacuation scene was shot.

If you're feeling a little nostalgic right now and thinking you need to see the movie again, you're in luck! It's part of the Mobile Saenger Summer Classic Movie Series! "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" will be shown on Sunday July 14th at 3pm.
