WATCH: Apollo 11 Launch, 50 Years Ago Today

"What can you say about a sight like that?" That was David Brinkley's reaction, moments after the launch of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

50 years ago today.

Less than a week later, Americans... and people all over the world... were watching as two of these astronauts set foot on the moon, declaring "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

I was desperately trying to stay awake and watch, sitting on my grandparents' bed in North Carolina... and I don't remember much, except that we all were watching.
