Diverging Diamond Interchange in Malbis: Be Prepared for Closure Sunday

OK, Eastern Shore... we've been hearing about this and seeing the construction work. But now it's time to actually figure out what this diverging diamond intersection at I-10 and Hwy 181 is all about. And be prepared for the intersection to be CLOSED completely this Sunday through Wednesday July 1.

This is such a big deal that the Diverging Diamond has its own webpage and Facebook page.

Here's the scoop, from ALDOT:

The Alabama Department of Transportation is constructing a new interchange at I-10 and SR-181 in Baldwin County. This new interchange, known as the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), will be the first one in Alabama. The DDI is designed to improve traffic flow efficiency and safety with fewer traffic lights and safer entry and exit lanes to and from I-10. The improved traffic flow with fewer conflict points is proven to reduce accidents and increase safety of motorists.

Weather permitting, ALDOT is closing the Interstate 10 and State Route 181 interchange on Sunday, June 28, beginning at 9 p.m. in order to prepare it for shifting traffic into the new diverging diamond configuration. The interchange will be back open by 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 1.
