"Irregardless" Has Been A Word For A Long Time

I've seen a lot of my friends bemoaning what they consider the newest disaster of 2020... the word "irregardless" is officially in the dictionary.

It's actually much ado about nothing. "Irregardless" has been in the dictionary for a long time (since 1934), but resurfaced in the "Words of the Week" blog by Merriam-Webster. This doesn't mean they endorse or condone its usage; they just recognize that it's used.

According to Merriam-Webster, "We do not make the English language, we merely record it. If people use a word with consistent meaning, over a broad geographic range, and for an extended period of time chances are very high that it will go into our dictionary."
