Is Netflix Cracking Down on Sharing Passwords?

My kids used to do it all the time. They'd be at a friend's house and want to watch something. So they'd give the friend our Netflix password.

And I was not the "fun Mom" when I told them they had to call their friends and get them to log out so I could watch a show.

Sharing passwords happens a lot. In fact, one research company reported that a THIRD of all Netflix users share their password with at least one other person.

Netflix is well aware of the practice and they may be about to start cracking down.

They're trying out a new policy, sending some customers this message:

“If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”

A Netflix spokesperson says the company tries "hundreds" of tests a year with select customers. The experiment may not lead to a larger enforcement, but could be applied to account security.

Some people seem to feel sharing is justifiable, because Netflix charges more than other streaming services.

Earlier this year, the company announced that it had topped 200-million subscribers worldwide.
