The trash situation in New Orleans after Hurricane Ida stinks.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell admits it. But the problem is that department was short-staffed before the hurricane and the storm only made it worse. She says, "We are looking at 3-5x the workload, with about 25% of the workforce."
Garbage has been piling up since the storm and at one point, the mayor opened up a drop-off location for residents to take their trash.
But who wants to put that in your car and sit in a long line, in the heat, to drop it off???
The mayor has initiated emergency clean up efforts, redeploying city employees from other departments to sanitation. It's been dubbed "Operation Mardi Gras" by the mayor, but they've had trouble getting the equipment needed.
So, some residents decided to protest the situation, New Orleans style. They organized a trash parade to City Hall.
Their theme? "No taxation without sanitation.'
