I'm not exactly a pizza purist, but I'm not sure that peas and mayonnaise makes for a good combination. And this guy's Twitter post about the strange combo sent the internet into a tizzy. But I can't really criticize, because as a kid, I loved peanut butter and mayo sandwiches -- and that apparently grosses everyone out. (Really, it's good).
But this awful pizza combo got me thinking about one pizza topping in particular that I always liked: Cashews! They're awesome on pizza, and yet I've only been to one pizza place (since closed... sigh) that ever served them. They made this great thin crust pizza with a garlic white sauce; and something about the cashews just gave it a great added flavor and texture -- one of my favorite pizzas anywhere. I've actually thought about going to Mellow Mushroom with a bag of cashews, and ask them to throw 'em on my pizza.
The thing about pizza is that it's really just bread. So if it's good on bread, you can make pizza with it. In the 80s, I worked at Domino's as a driver (yes, I know my way around); and we would cook up all kinds of pizza. For breakfast, I remember one with peaches and cream cheese -- delicious!
So what weirdly wonderful ingredients would you suggest we put on a pizza?
