April's first tropical event (or in this case, subtropical) since 2003 is in the Atlantic. It's not really going anywhere and not expected to strengthen, but it's highly unusual for a system to form this early. In fact, there's been just one tropical storm on record during the month of April since 1851.
If it continues to develop, it would become the first named storm of the season: Subtropical Storm Arlene.
If you're wondering what's the difference between a "tropical storm" and a "subtropical storm," Accuweather says it's simply that one has both tropical and non-tropical characteristics, while the other.... tropical characteristics. No, that didn't help. Maybe this Wikipedia page will do better.
