There's a new Mellow Mushroom location in West Mobile. This one's on Schillinger near Cottage Hill, so it's 6-1/2 miles from the other West Mobile location at Old Shell & University. A little more than 9 miles from the location on Airport Blvd. at the Loop.
The main thing about this new location is that it's NEW! And I feel like we should put that up in neon lights, because the menu is the same. The whole wheat pizza crust is the same. The beer is the same. But according to one Facebook comment, the new location had a 90-minute wait when she arrived!
Now that may not be the norm, but it does make me wonder: Why stick around for a long wait, when there are two other locations just 15 and 23 minutes away? (Thanks, Google Maps!).
I'm not sure if this is a uniquely Gulf Coast experience, or "The Mobile experience in full force" as another comment suggested. But I've seen this before. Years ago, I met a friend at what was then the brand new O'Charley's in Daphne. It was new, people were lining up to eat there. The wait was crazy!! So we decided that rather than wait an hour for a table, we'd just go to another O'Charley's location -- 20 minutes away in Mobile. I wouldn't be surprised if we'd finished eating before customers at the new location had even been seated.
I get it. Mellow Mushroom has some good pizza. But if my choice is a long wait at a new location, or to be immediately seated at another location 20 minutes away? I'm heading over to one of my old standby locations. Eventually, the crowds will die down at the new store, and I'll see if there really is anything different about it.
