Not many White House press secretaries are a household name. Nor is it a job most people would relish, even when the President isn't Donald Trump. But Sean Spicer has done both. Thanks in part to Melissa McCarthy's sketches on Saturday Night Live, Trump's Press Secretary has gone positively mainstream.
But it's not an easy job and most people would agree that he's made it look even harder -- a lot harder. His potential replacement told the San Jose Mercury-News:
“Sean Spicer is a very nice man and a patriot; he’s dedicated himself to this public service. Very tough position he’s in — I wish him the best, and I know he puts a lot of effort into it.”
That's Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle playing the "he's a nice man" card (uh oh). During that same interview, she sounded a lot like she was interviewing for the job, as well. Now there's rampant speculation that Spicer is on the way out, and Guilfoyle is on the way in. It hasn't helped that even Trump has mentioned the possibility.
It wouldn't be a surprise. Press secretaries have a short life span in that position, because it's such a challenging job. It's probably not a matter of if Sean Spicer will go, it's when. And when that happens, will there be another role for someone on Saturday Night Live....
