The Crescent Theater Film Society announced that the beloved Downtown Mobile movie theater would be closing permanently sometime in early May. The non-profit group pays the rent, and they were unable to renew the lease.
However, that's all changed. The theater is still there, and maybe it can remain for the foreseeable future. They have been offered a two-year lease at rents that are more comparable to what the space should cost in Downtown Mobile, but the money's not there.
So... they're having a fundraiser. As of this writing, nearly $10,000 has been raised to Save the Crescent Theater. The money goes directly to the Crescent Theater Film Society, to pay that monthly rent bill. Otherwise, the theater manages to be self-sustaining.
To me, the Crescent Theater is a civic asset. It's amenities like these that make our city a great place to live. I support these amenities that enhance our quality of life but need our help to survive -- by buying tickets and/or making donations when possible (depending on need). If you can, please support the cinematic arts and make a donation.
