Hank Williams Jr.'s iconic "Are You Ready for Some Football?" got booted from the Monday Night Football telecasts on ESPN some six years ago. That's when he compared President Barack Obama to Hitler. (Rule #1: the Hitler comparison is usually the wrong way to go). When speaking on Fox News, he talked about GOP House Speaker John Boehner and the POTUS playing golf together with these words: "That would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister) Netanyahu."
For what it's worth, Hank Jr. said he quit before he got fired. But whatever, the end result was the same.
Maybe enough time has passed, or maybe his Obama-as-Hitler moment sounds positively quaint today with the vitriol that's being spewed seemingly everywhere.
In any event, Hank Jr. is coming back for MNF this fall. ESPN says they're not too worried about any backlash, and "it's the right time."
And that's fine. His statements are six years old, and they were stupid and hateful... and all of that. But the song is the song, and people like it. Time to let it go.
