The final piece of the puzzle is done, and now it's really official: The Carnival Fantasy will continue to call the Alabama Cruise Terminal home for at least another year. The Mobile City Council unanimously approved the extension at today's council meeting.
Some of the new cruise destinations that Carnival is booking:
- Eastern Caribbean, including Key West and The Bahamas.
- Longer Western Caribbean cruises -- 8-day cruises would also feature Belize and Mahogany Bay (Honduras), and a 6-day cruise would add Grand Cayman to the itinerary
- A cruise branded as Carnival Journeys will sail from Mobile during September 2018, taking in the Panama Canal and Limón, Costa Rica.
And although the contract extension only covers us through 2018, Carnival is actually booking all the way into April 2019. And while that's not a guarantee that the cruise line will stick around for yet another year, it's certainly a good sign. Just as it was the first time around, Carnival has had plenty of success with Mobile as a cruise port. Ships are full; and in a recent passenger survey, Mobile ranked #1 for friendliness and hospitality.
