Hurricane Maria has caused massive destruction in the Leeward Islands, as witnessed by this aerial footage taken over Dominica. CNN reports that seven people were killed on the island.
The storm has moved on and weakened slightly, but Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a major Category 4 hurricane -- packing winds of 155 miles per hour. That isn't quite as strong as Camille, which plowed into the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969; but it's still among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded in United States territory. And we're grateful, very grateful, that the winds actually diminished from a high of 175 mph, just a few hours before Maria made landfall. The entire island of Puerto Rico was without power.
The latest from the National Hurricane Center at THIS LINK. Maria is expected to pass the Dominican Republic on Thursday, Turks and Caicos on Friday. Hurricane warnings are posted in those areas.
