The images and stories coming out of Mexico are heartbreaking. Hundreds dead, including at least 20 children at one school that collapsed.
The tragic irony of it all is that this earthquake happened on the 32nd anniversary, to the day, of the infamous 1985 Mexico City quake that killed thousands. Building standards have certainly improved in the intervening years, but still 44 buildings collapsed in Mexico City alone; and the US Geological Survey has estimated this latest earthquake will cost up to one thousand lives.
This is Mexico's second major earthquake in two weeks. The last was centered measured 8.1 on the Richter scale and was centered just off Mexico's Pacific Coast. This latest earthquake, a 7.1 magnitude, was inland and far too close to the largest city in the world. Which helps explain why a weaker earthquake would do so much more damage.
Please keep our neighbors in Mexico in your prayers.
