Worst. National. Anthem. Ever.
That's what some people have said on social media, after Fergie put her own spin on the National Anthem at Sunday's NBA All-Star Game. (You were watching the Olympics and didn't see it, right?)
It was a bit... unique, but when Jimi Hendrix first belted out the National Anthem on his electric guitar, it was also very different. And widely panned. Today, the Jimi Hendrix version is a classic.
I don't think Fergie's version will be a classic. Which is too bad, because I'm a fan.
It was less about her interpretation of the song to me; and more about the screechy singing. Meanwhile, more than one person observed that Fergie's National Anthem was either "sexy" or attempting to be. Note to future National Anthem singers: it's not supposed to be a sexy song.
And Jimmy Fallon joked about the length of the Anthem in Monday night's 5-minute episode of the show. He compared it to the length of the Olympics thus far.
At times during the song, Fergie showed us how amazing her voice can be. And Fergie looks amazing.
On Monday, Fergie spoke out about the performance, saying she's "a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best."
This is not a National Anthem she'll want to remember.
