The Most Popular Baby Names in 2017

A name says something about you. It may not say much about who you are or your personality, but it's often a dead giveaway for about when you were born. If your name is Lisa, chances are good you were born in the 60s. Because it was America's most popular name for girls during that decade. Michael was #1 for boys.

If a girl's name is Jennifer, chances are she was born in the 70s. Michael was still #1 in the 70s for boys.

And a lot of girls were named Ashley in the 80s and Jessica in the 90s. Don't ask what #1 was for boys in those decades. Yup, Michael.

Michael was the #1 name for boys for at least forty years (1954-1998), so parents clearly didn't get overly creative naming their boys. Things have changed since 1998, when Jacob finally displaced Michael. And it was only this past year when Michael dropped out of the Top 10 as a popular baby name.

So let's start over and ust say a girl's name is often a dead giveaway for the decade in which they were born.

This year, and for the fourth consecutive year, EMMA is the most popular girl's name. LIAM is the new #1 among boys.
