Mel Showers isn't a guy who needs an introduction, not here on the Gulf Coast. The recently retired anchor for WKRG spent fifty years at the station and has a compelling story to tell. He was the first African-American to anchor a TV newscast in our area, after two decades at the station. Previously, he'd worked as a booth announcer and reporter. For so many of us, Mel seemed like a member of the family. You could turn on the news with Mel Showers, and his delivery somehow let you know that everything was going to be alright. No matter how bad the days' news was.
But between all the accolades and streets being named in his honor and even a Mel Showers exhibit, there's a side to Mel you probably didn't know about. Mel Showers played basketball at Bishop State, and that's the reason for his latest honor. According to al.com, Mel Showers is being inducted into the Bishop State Sports Hall of Fame. We don't know much about Mel's basketball playing days, as nearly every story about the man is focused on his broadcasting career. But I suspect we'll learn a lot more when he's inducted on January 17, 2020 at the Downtown Mobile Holiday Inn. TIckets are $35 and will benefit Bishop State athletics.
